Description of the project
GPS vehicle theft tracker project detects vehicle theft. Then it activates the vehicle Tracking system. The microcontroller reads the vehicle coordinates using the GPS modem. Then Microcontroller sends a text SMS to the owner of the vehicle using the GSM modem. This SMS contains a link to track the vehicle in Google Maps. We have provided the Ignition lock with the GPS based Vehicle theft detection system project.
The system activates a vibration sensor once the user removes the key from the lock. After this, if the system detects the vibration then it acknowledges it as invalid access to the vehicle. The system treats it as vehicle theft. The system immediately activates the Buzzer and sends a text SMS to the user.
Then Microcontroller continuously keeps on sending an SMS to the owner of the vehicle. This SMS contains the Longitude and Latitude of the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle can click on the link provided in the text SMS. Thus the user can track the exact location of the vehicle using Google Maps. We can achieve the purpose of Vehicle theft detection and prevention by using Car theft detection using GPS and GSM technology project. Every alternate day we hear news about vehicle theft. Some of these vehicles are never traced. However, with the use of the advanced vehicle theft tracking system, the owner can find his/her car in a few minutes.
Description in detail:
This project is one of the most important projects among all the GPS Projects. various important blocks of the system are:
- Vibration Sensor: It is a kind of Piezoelectric sensor. It detects the amount of vibration, compares it with the threshold level set by the user, and gives a high pulse at its output. We have used a Digital output vibration sensor.
- Ignition Lock: This is used to identify that owner has left the vehicle. Any action after key removal will be considered invalid access to the vehicle.
- Microcontroller: We have used an 8051 series Microcontroller, AT89s51. 8051 communicates with a sensor, ignition key, LCD display, GPS modem, and GSM modem.
- LCD display: This is a non-mandatory component of the circuit. However, it is an important part while developing the project.
- GPS modem: It sends out data on the serial port and this data contains various information including the Longitude and Latitude of the vehicle’s current location.
- GSM Modem: Microcontroller sends AT commands to the GSM modem and then the GSM modem sends an SMS.
- Buzzer: We have used a piezoelectric buzzer to give an alert about vehicle theft and this buzzer will be activated when Vibrations are detected.

Question: What is the range of the system?
Answer : GPS will work every time. And range of GSM depends on simcard network. As long as simcard gets network coverage, it will send sms.
