Description of the project:

Throughout time we have been fascinated by the weather and studying signs of change in weather. We also make predictions and act up those predictions. Today we can link modern instruments to computers to reduce human error and automate the record-keeping task. The aim of the SMS based Weather report information system project is to monitor weather conditions, including temperature, atmospheric humidity, and solar light intensity through SMS alerts using a GSM modem.

Local weather measurements are extremely important to a wide range of professions, from horticulturists to firefighters. It provides around-the-clock monitoring of various types of applications.

For example, it can be used in a greenhouse to manage climate control and help promote favorable growing conditions. In solar power applications, it can verify the performance of photovoltaic (PV) array systems by monitoring solar radiation, DC power, and other parameters. Green roofs can help researchers understand performance by tracking air temperature, turf temperature, and soil moisture.

Detailed Description of SMS based Weather report information system:

SMS based Weather report information project is a fine combination of analog and digital electronics. The project consists of parameter monitoring, and parameter sending through SMS. GSM interface is one of the main features of the project in which various data like the value of parameters, date, and time are sent by SMS.

89s51 Microcontroller is the main component of the project. Now a Microcontroller has become the main component of many electronic circuits. Also, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) and sensors are used on a major basis for display and sensing purposes.

SMS based Weather report information system project consists of two primary modules. The first is “Data monitoring” & other is “Data Sending” A display unit will show the value of parameters. This will help the person to know the values, for this purpose we are going to use various sensors, which will be connected to ADC. The other module is named parameter sending. It can be used to send the parameter values to a remote location.

We are going to use a GSM modem. These values can later be seen using a mobile SMS inbox. This system is useful because many times it’s difficult to measure the parameter values manually and also this module is more accurate than the domestic system.

You will get the following documents with this project:

  1. Project Report in pdf format and in doc (word) format
  2. Circuit diagram of the project.
  3. PCB layout of the project.
  4. Microcontroller program in assembly language
  5. Hex file of the microcontroller code
  6. Datasheets of all the components / ICs used in the project

Description in detail:

  1. ADC: We are going to use ADC 0808 which is 8-bit and 8 channels ADC. Since we have two inputs for ADC, we have used this ADC.
  2. LCD: Liquid Crystal Display which is commonly known as LCD is an Alphanumeric Display which means that it can display Alphabets, Numbers as well as special symbols thus LCD is a user-friendly display device that can be used for displaying various messages, unlike seven segment display which can display only numbers and some of the alphabets. The only disadvantage of LCD over seven segments is that seven segments are a robust display and be visualized from a longer distance as compared to LCD. A 16 x 2 Alphanumeric Display is used in this project. This LCD can display two lines with a maximum of 16 characters in one line.
  3. GSM modem: We need to send the parameter values to some devices. We have chosen a GSM modem for this purpose.
  4. MICRO-CONTROLLER (8051): This is the most important segment of the project, i.e. the microcontroller 8051. The controller is responsible for the detection and polling of the peripheral’s status. It is responsible for making. It is responsible for prioritizing all the devices attached to it. It is the major part of the system which controls all the operations of the circuit such as LCD interfacing, and GSM modem interfacing. It also decides the messages to be displayed on the LCD along with the time duration they should be displayed on the LCD.

Sensors used in SMS based Weather report information system

  1. TEMPERATURE SENSOR: This is the first sensor which uses to sense temperature parameters. This can be a temperature sensor, say LM35. The sensor will be placed on the front panel. One can use an LCD display to read the temperature.
  2. HUMIDITY SENSOR: It is the second sensor which uses to sense the environment’s humidity parameters. This can be a Humidity sensor. The sensor will be placed on the front panel.
  3. LIGHT SENSOR: It’s the third sensor which uses to sense solar light intensity parameters. This can be a light sensor, say LDR. The sensor will be placed on the front panel.
  4. AMPLIFIER: LM358 is used as an amplifier. It is having 2 inbuilt amplifiers. Since we have a temperature sensor, we have used this Amplifier.

Applications and Advantages of SMS based Weather report information system:

This electronic circuit is mainly used in “Weather stations”. This project can also be used for the following application

  1. We can use this project to calculate and store the temperature and humidity of a boiler in the industry.
  2. This project can store the flow of the water flowing from the dam or a canal.
  3. SMS based weather reporting can be used to monitor/display the level of the liquid inside the container.
  4. This system communicates with mobile and sends various data like the level of humidity, liquid flow, and temperature of the water.

Future Development:

  1. IOT enabled weather reporting system can be implemented using IOT techniques. This can be used to send weather reports to the cloud over the internet by interfacing wifi module to the project.
  2. The SMS based Weather report information system can monitor and store more parameters like the PH of soil, and pressure, by replacing the existing sensor with the respective sensor.
  3. If we interface a memory IC or a memory card. This will help to store this data in a memory location.
  4. With the help of a computer, we can draw graphs of variations in these parameters.

what are the drawbacks of sms based weather forecast project

    • Microtronics Technologies

Hi eklavya nanda, the limitations of this project is that, it monitors only 3 parameters of weather. Also user needs to recharge the GSM sim card as per the required sms quantity and at least for every 3 months.

can i use Max232 to automatically sends an sms? if yes how can i do interfaced with PIC?

  • Subashri

We are planned to do the same project but varying the parameters. Actually we have a doubt what is the use for measuring humidity in plants and some plants does not have humidity concern. what is the use of measuring humidity in plants
