Description of the project

Nowadays lots of accidents happen on highways due to the increase in traffic and also due to rash driving of drivers. And in many situations, the family members of the ambulance and police authority are not informed in time. This results in delaying the help reached to the person who suffered due to an accident. Our project Vehicle Accident Detection with GPS and GSM modem is designed to avoid such situations.

Description in detail:

In this project, we are going to use an accident detection unit that will be fitted inside the front and rear bonnets of the car. This accident detection unit consists of two metallic plates which are kept at a little distance apart from each other. In case of an accident, if the car is hit by some other vehicle or an object then due to the impact the two metal plates will come in contact with each other. Due to this, a signal will be sent to the microcontroller. The microcontroller is the central processing unit CPU of our project. Once the microcontroller gets a signal from metal plates, then it will immediately turn on the buzzer.

The function of the Key

We have provided a key to the project. This key should be used by the driver. If the accident is very normal, or the driver has just hit the wall in some situations like parking then the driver will press the key. This will inform the microcontroller that this is a very normal accident and then the system will not send sms. But if the driver is not in a situation to press the switch or if the accident is really a major accident then the driver will not press the key and then the system will send an SMS.

The microcontroller receives the coordinates from the GPS modem. Then it will send this information to the GSM modem. The GSM modem is used to send this information via SMS. SMS will be sent to the family member of the driver so that they can take immediate action to help the persons suffering due to this accident.

Enhancement / Feature added to this project:

In this project, we have added an alcohol sensor. The purpose of the Alcohol sensor is to detect the consumption of alcohol by the driver of the vehicle. This will help to prevent the accident caused due to the “Drink and drive” conditions. Implementing an alcohol sensor project will be “Vehicle accident detection and prevention”. We are informing the owner of the car through SMS that the driver has consumed alcohol.

The alcohol sensor will be placed on the steering wheel of the car. This means the sensor will be just near the driver of the vehicle. The purpose behind this is that if some other person has consumed the alcohol then it should send an SMS. For example the person near the driver or backseat. If a person other than the driver has consumed alcohol then the sensor will not detect the presence of alcohol. This is because the range of the sensor is low. The sensor detects only the percentage of alcohol in the air which is near the steering wheel.

Alcohol sensor implemented in the Accident detection system

This alcohol sensor is an analog sensor and as the microcontroller is not able to read the analog voltage, so we have used a comparator. The output of the alcohol sensor is variable voltage. As the alcohol percentage increases the voltage will also increase. So when there is no alcohol consumption, the low voltage will be at the output. And when the person has consumed the alcohol, the voltage will increase. So we have used a comparator, this comparator has a fixed voltage at its positive input. And at the negative input, the voltage from the output of the analog alcohol sensor is given.

Whenever the voltage of the sensor crosses the threshold voltage level, the comparator gives low output to the microcontroller. This way microcontroller detects the output from the alcohol sensor. Then it sends out an SMS to the owner of the car indicating that the driver has consumed the alcohol. This SMS will also contain the longitude and latitude. So in this way, the owner will also come to know the location of the vehicle.

Applications and Advantages of Vehicle Accident Detection with GPS and GSM modem:

  2. This project can be used for cab or car of companies.

Future Development:

  1. We can monitor some parameters of vehicles like overheating or LPG gas leakage
  2. We can dial an emergency call if the vehicle goes out of a certain / pre-decided track.

Questions and answers about this project:

Question: The 8051 microcontroller has only 1 RXD and 1 TXD pins on p3.0 and p3.1 respectively. Then how can we interface both modems to the microcontroller because the output of max 232 of one modem is connected to RXD pin of 8051, but 8051 has only 1 RXD pin then how can we do it?

Answer: This information is mentioned in the project report which you will get with the project.

Question: Can we add sensors to this project? Can we enhance this project to add some more modules?

Answer: Yes, we can enhance this project. We can add these Modules: LPG gas sensor, Temperature sensor, etc.

Question: Which GSM modem is used in this project? can we use a mobile handset instead of the modem?

Answer: We have used SIMcom 300 GSM modem. No, we can’t use the mobile handset
